Course Tuned Guitar Workshop

Course tuning is one of many experiments that can be conducted using guitars, pianos, or any other stringed instrument, to facilitate improvisation. Course tuning is when a stringed instrument is tuned to a single note in one or more octaves. When used in an ensemble with each player fretting a different note, polyphony (independent tones in harmony) is achieved.

This workshop will give students the opportunity to first watch and listen to several small performances using a small ensemble of players from the Sulphuric Symphony, then to participate in a question-and-answer period, followed by hands-on experimentation with the specially tuned guitars.
