Joseph Giant (Album Release)

KENYON HALL PRESENTS

The Record Release Party for "A Night In The Sun" by Joseph Giant

Doors: 7:00pm / Show: 7:30pm

$12 General Admission / $10 Senior/Student

Joseph Giant is a stage name adopted by Seattle singer and songwriter Joe Syverson whose beautifully crafted bedroom americana indie folk rock songs lead the listener down a path of hope, love and loss. Born and raised in a religious cult that his family left at the age of 12. Joe found escape in writing songs at a young age and eventually moving to Seattle where he was a member and fronted many bands over the years including Terror Sheets, Throw Me The Statue (Secretly Canadian) Pearly Gate Music (Barsuk), Final Spins, & Floored Faces.

With the arrival of his third album A Night In The Sun, Joseph Giant immediately pulls the listener into a world of lush instrumentation (drum machines, acoustic guitars, reverb soaked vocals) with guitar lines that flirt with ticklish cosmic country and others that reflect the dark garage sounds of the early 60’s. Home recorded and self produced with just enough polish to bring out the shining and melancholy undertones of Syverson’s vocals. There is an abiding sadness with a friendly and familiar theme of light carrying you through the dark times, “one more night in the sun” indeed."

Brent Allen Carpenter is a musician who has lived in Seattle, Washington his whole life and has written songs and composed music for the better part of thirty-five years. Most of his musical output has taken place in bands. *** His story is similar to other punk rockers that have answered the call to take up the acoustic guitar and serenade his friends from time to time.

Most of Brent’s solo “career” has been sporadic performances around Seattle. He admits that solo performances “are terrifying. I’m a band guy! I don’t like being the only one on stage and usually have to force myself to play solo twice a year just to do it…”

Although shows are sparse, he enjoys the creative process; writing and recording is one of his favored artforms. Lithic Records has been going through his catalog and re-mastering some of the older sessions. At the time of this writing (1/3/25) Brent is working on a new full length effort. We’ll keep you posted.

***Brent Carpenter has been in: BlöödHag – Audio Infidels – The Grindylow – Blue Collar – Muchos Arms – Eternal 13 – Antiquarian – Black Friday – Pure Tons of Love – Lynss – Subculture"

The Pigeon and The Dove: A History of Hatred & Love is a powerful and evolving lo-fi folk opera about Pigeons! Well, really, it's about housing insecurity and the many roads one can take to end up on the street. A mix of comedy, social justice, and dark yet danceable tunes. By singing these stories, we might make them easier to hear. But really...it's about pigeons.

Wes Weddell & Del Rey

Saturday, April 19th 2025

$15 General Admission / $10 Senior/Student

For the past two-and-a-half decades, Wes Weddell has worked multiple shifts in the engine room of Seattle’s roots music scene as frontman, sideman, writer, teacher, and community-builder. “Always heartfelt and well-constructed” (Seattle Weekly), listeners have come to expect Weddell’s regionally rooted songs to “speak for themselves” (No Depression). Yet performed live—solo or with his band behind him—the melodic stories deepen further against the backdrop of the multi-instrumentalist’s relatable presence and quick wit. In 2010, Weddell began working with The Bushwick Book Club Seattle, an expanding collective of songwriters who each compose new music inspired by literature to share in monthly showcases focused around specific books. Songs from this catalog appear on his latest release, Somewhere in the Middle (2019), and comprise the entirety of the full-band showpiece Nobody’s Flag (2015).

Del Rey started playing guitar when she was four. At the age of thirteen, Del was introduced to the world of traditional acoustic music, when a friend and she stumbled into a concert at Folk Arts Rare Records in San Diego. About 20 people were sitting on the floor under the record bins listening to a kid named Tom Waits play his original songs.

Lou Curtiss, proprietor of Folk Arts and artistic director of the San Diego Folk Festival suggested she quit wasting her time playing “Stairway to Heaven” and listen to some Memphis Minnie. He put her on stage with Sam Chatmon when she was fourteen, and introduced her to Lydia Mendoza and Howard Armstrong. Lou gave Del recordings that still influence everything she does on solo acoustic guitar. She soaked up country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie. It was a musical education hanging around the record shop.

Thirty years later, Del became fascinated with the ukulele, playing the same kind of complicated rhythmic blues and ragtime on four strings as on six. She expects a lot out of the little instrument.

“Del Rey, who plays a syncopated style of guitar based on prewar blues and barrelhouse piano traditions, is one of the best fingerpickers of this or any generation. “ Ian Zack, Acoustic Guitar

“Whilst known for her amazing instrumental skills … it should not be overlooked that she always provides a very entertaining show, full of variety, drama and humour.” Blues In Britain

Featuring Julian Smedley

Doors: 7:00pm / Show: 7:30pm

$15 General Admission / $10 Senior/Student

Genre bending-blending singer/songwriter/guitarist Cyd Smith is hard to pin down. With years of performing in the Nortwest in bands covering everything from bluegrass to swing to rock 'n roll, she covers a remarkable breadth of stylistic ground, Her deft guitar playing interweaves seamlessly with her soulful, sensuous vocals. She can deliver a self-penned song with depth and charm or give new meaning to a vintage swing standard. Or perhaps she'll get your feet tapping to a ripping guitar arrangement of an old piano rag or heat up the room with a classic blues ballad.

With songs full of wry wit and tenderhearted longing, Greg Scott accompanies his distinctive baritone voice with skillful guitar in a variety of styles. Tonight Greg brings some of his classic material ("Moonlight Ain't No Use To Me", "Work For The County") and some new ones like "The Worms and the Germs".

In the days when singer-songwriters ruled the NW Folklife Festival, Greg Scott was one that audiences made sure to seek out. Of late, Greg has been working a bit under the radar, with a composing group consisting of crackerjack musicians Julian Smedley, Kim Scanlon, Ben Smith, and Libby Torrance. “The Palace Thieves“ will be releasing an album in early 2025.

Julian Smedley’s exquisite violin and tasty solos round out the evening's musical offerings. Julian has had a career as a violinist and vocalist in England, the Bay Area and now the Northwest. He has played and recorded with many bands and currently works as a record producer, arranger session musician and performer. Recent projects include ‘Les Cygnes’- a 13 song original recording co-written with The Palace Thieves (band mate Greg Scott features prominently)!

Mary Flower continues to please crowds and critics at folk festivals, teaching seminars and concert stages domestically and abroad, that include Merlefest, Kerrville, King Biscuit, Prairie Home Companion and the Vancouver Folk Festival, among many.

A finalist in 2000 and 2002 at the National Finger Picking Guitar Championship, a nominee in 2008, 2012 and 2016 for a Blues Foundation Blues Music Award, and many times a Cascade Blues Assn. Flower’s 11 recordings, including her four for Memphis’ famed Yellow Dog Records — Bywater Dance, Instrumental Breakdown, Bridges and Misery Loves Company — show a deep command of and love for folk and blues string music. For Flower, it’s never about re-creation. Her dedication to the art form is a vital contribution to America’s music.

From Dennis Rea in Earshot Magazine

Influential saxophonist, bandleader, painter, and writer Wally Shoup passed away peacefully on March 5 in Seattle after a long illness. For decades, Shoup was a leading advocate of free improvisation and a mentor by example to scores of musicians spanning generations in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Born in North Carolina in 1944, Shoup experienced an epiphany after being exposed to free jazz and psychedelic rock as a young man living in Atlanta. He henceforth devoted himself to music, inspired initially by the free jazz of John Coltrane and other African-American musicians and later by the non-idiomatic free improvisation emerging from Europe and Britain, in particular. A self-taught alto saxophonist, he participated in improvised music circles in Birmingham, Alabama, and in Colorado and Los Angeles, before moving to Seattle permanently in 1985.

During his time in Seattle, Shoup led or participated in numerous cutting-edge groups including the New Art Orchestra, Catabatics, Pulsation Crew, Project W, Stackpole, Ghidra, Subduction Zone, Spider Trio, Lost Valentine, Sych, and his Deep Lounge Quartet, plus other regular duo, trio, and quartet formations such as his Campbell Shoup duo with percussionist Greg Campbell. He performed and toured throughout the U.S. and in England, Europe, and Canada in collaboration with such leading lights as Wilco’s Nels Cline, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Davey Williams, Toshi Makihara, and Chris Corsano. He was keenly interested in cross-discipline collaboration and frequently performed with dancers and spoken-word artists. He appeared on more than 30 recordings.

In 2009, Shoup was listed among Seattle Metropolitan Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Musicians in the city’s history, and in 2018, he was inducted into Earshot’s Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in co-founding the Seattle Improvised Music Festival, which grew into the world’s longest-running event focused on freely improvised music (now on hiatus after 35 years). He also provided opportunities for countless musicians as organizer of the Other Sounds concert series and similar events. He was a prolific commentator on improvised and other music in The Improvisor, Perfect Sound Forever, and other publications. A collection of his writings, Music as Adventure, was published by Nine Muses Books in 2011.

Wally Shoup will long be remembered for his passionate playing, wry humor, and acute observations on music and the human condition. He is survived by his partner Shirley Wong and his daughter Laney Shoup. A three-day memorial celebration featuring dozens of his former collaborators will take place August 23-25 at The Royal Room, Chapel Performance Space, Kenyon Hall, and Gallery 1412.

Proceeds will be donated to Wally’s partner. His final recorded works will be available for purchase at the event.
